Tortoise Capital Advisors, L.L.C. (TCA) specializes in managing portfolios of carefully selected energy infrastructure companies organized as Master Limited Partnerships (MLPs). MLPs are publicly traded and similar to stocks in many respects. The distinguishing features of MLPs generally include high and steadily increasing dividends and a federal tax status that eliminates double taxation and substantially reduces their cost of capital. TCA is one of the largest and oldest managers of energy infrastructure MLPs.
Affiliate of Atlantic Asset Management
TCA became an affiliate of Atlantic in 2003. Certain Atlantic clients permit an allocation to MLPs; and Atlantic takes an active role in institutional marketing for TCA. Additionally, Atlantic created and maintains indexes of MLP securities.
History and Organizational Structure
TCA has two classes of ownership. Atlantic owns the Class B interest and the Class A voting interest is owned by Fountain Capital Management, L.L.C. and Kansas City Equity Partners, L.C. The firm was founded in 2002 and is located in Overland Park, Kansas. Tortoise manages roughly $3 billion across a number of closed end funds (listed on the New York Stock Exchange) and separate accounts.
